Confidentiality of the Sacrament of Confession
I Know This Much Is TrueConfidentiality of the Sacrament of Confession is presented as a sacred boundary around speech in the confessional: Father Guglielmo assures the narrator that what is said there is between the penitent and God. The rule offers a protected religious setting for disclosure, but it does not compel the narrator to speak or erase his distinction between church matters and what belongs to his home.
The Confessional as a Protected Setting
Father Guglielmo first proposes that the narrator ask his questions within the traditional form of confession. He says this would signal God to listen and ensure the sanctity of what the narrator has to say. The setting is made part of the assurance: the narrator kneels inside the closed confessional, facing the priest’s shadow behind the screen, while his hands tremble. Neither speaks for a time.
When the narrator agrees to proceed, Father Guglielmo emphasizes that the confessional’s sanctity governs their exchange. He tells him, “Whatever you say or I ask here is between you and the Almighty Father,” and describes himself as acting only as God’s representative. The promise is framed as religious confidentiality, not as a general guarantee about every conversation outside the confessional.
Silence and the Limits of Disclosure
The assurance does not immediately produce a confession. Even after entering the booth and accepting the proposed form, the narrator falls silent. His hesitation gives the rule dramatic weight: the space is offered for speech, but the decision to disclose remains his.
A question about “Murdering?” brings the boundary between confession and domestic life into focus. The narrator stops the subject, saying that it is the business of his home, not the church. The exchange does not establish that he has confessed to murder; instead, it shows him withholding an explanation and deciding what he will keep outside the conversation. The confidentiality rule thus creates the conditions for disclosure without resolving the tension between sacred privacy and family silence.
